The history of Colgate is traced from 1873 when it was founded by William Colgate. The man was a soap and candle maker who began selling his wares in New York City under the name William Colgate & Company.

When he died, he was succeeded by his son Samuel Colgate under the new name Colgate & Company. Today, the small soap and candle business that William Colgate began has grown to be a global company.
