The ceremony was held at ILembe Auditorium and was attended by members of the Economic Development, Planning, Special Programmes and Youth Affairs Portfolio Committee led by Chairperson Cllr. Sicelinjabulo Cele as well as beneficiaries, parents, and guardians. Also in attendance were Councillors Sanele Mthiyane and Muzi “Ali” Ngidi.

During the delivery of the Keynote Address, Mayor Nhaca said “This year, the municipality 120 applications and 69 of these applicants awarded with the assistance. The 69 beneficiaries comprise of 45 new applicants and 24 returning applicants.”
“Now in its tenth year, the initiative was designed by the municipality to provide financial assistance for Registration/Admission Fees to the value of R 5 000.00 each, to academically deserving, needy and historically disadvantaged students of KwaDukuza pursuing full-time under-graduate qualifications accredited by South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) in registered Higher Education and Training Institutions,” added Nhaca.
“Reasons cited for applicants who were unsuccessful includes, applicants pursuing postgraduate qualifications, applicants registered with privately-owned colleges, no proof of residence provided with on applications, no proof of parents/guardian income status provided with applications and applicants who submitted applications with missing pages and missing supporting documents,” added Nhaca.

The municipality targeted/prioritised the following areas of study due to identified local government scarce skills:
Built Environment (Architecture, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Town & Regional Planning, Civil engineering, Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current).
Commerce (Logistics or Supply Chain Management, Internal Audit, Accounting, Property Valuation, Risk management, Public Finance).
Environmental Management.
Horticulture.
Occupational Health and Safety.
Library Science.
Performance Management/Monitoring & Evaluation.
Housing.
Legal.
Community and Economic Development Studies.
Local Government Management.
“To the young ladies and men here today, I wish to warn you against the temptation of being lured to the life of cross-generational relationships, that is sugar daddies and sugar mammas when you are in varsity because the reality is that older men and women seek sexual favours from the young thereby crippling their future,” said Nhaca.

“As a community, we must protect our loved ones from cross-generational relationships, especially to these children who have a responsibility to study and to become better and make better their backgrounds. Collectively we ought to revive the ethos of creating a taboo against cross-generational sex; promoting healthy livelihoods; providing languages of opposition; and modelling and encouraging appropriate behaviours for community members,” concluded Nhaca.

Beneficiary, Ms Olwethu Nxumalo, who will be studying towards the Degree of Electrical Engineering at UKZN shared learning tips her peers could use to attain better results so that they could qualify for such assistance in the future. She was also grateful for the opportunity bestowed by the municipality to her to further her studies.
