Botswana’s highly anticipated urban drama series, Colours, will debut on SABC
1. This marks a historic moment as it’s the first original local drama series from
Botswana to be licensed by the public broadcaster.
Colours, a collaboration between renowned South African filmmaker,
Bonginhlanhla Ncube (aka “Mr. B”), and Botswana’s Samuel Ngwenya (Swanky
Arrays), revolves around a young man, Tirelo (played by Tulani Tau), who
transforms his character flaws into strengths while navigating the challenges
of parenthood after his mother’s passing. The series features a talented young
cast and has become a fan favorite in Botswana over the past two years.
The show portrays the social challenges faced by urban populations in
Botswana and South Africa, addressing issues like drugs, peer pressure,
dysfunctional families, and HIV/AIDS. It emphasizes the value of hard work in
Gaborone, Botswana’s bustling metropolis, mirroring the diversity of
Colours weaves together stories of love, hope, ambition, and betrayal,
mirroring the colorful tapestry of life in Gaborone and Johannesburg.
Leading the cast are Kegopotswe Kgomotso Ratsie, Fitzgerald Sebolao, and
Sharon Seno, among others. The first season follows Tirelo as he navigates the
corporate world and discovers a mind-enhancing drug called AZT, similar to
films like Limitless and Lucy.
The series, conceptualized by Bonginhlanhla Ncube and Samuel Ngwenya, was
originally commissioned by Botswana TV in 2018 and licensed to Moja Love.
SABC 1’s licensing agreement brings the show to its largest audience yet, with
over 20 million viewers.
Samuel Ngwenya expressed his vision for Colours as an international
production, stating, “We produced Colours with international appeal in mind.”
Bonginhlanhla Ncube added, “We’re proud to introduce this brilliant series to
our audience. It’s relatable not only to South Africans but potentially to the
entire African continent.”
