Southern Guild expands to the US with new LA gallery

Southern Guild is proud to announce its expansion to Los Angeles, California in February 2024, making it the first in South Africa to establish a permanent gallery in the U.S.

The new space will occupy an historic 1920s building on Western Avenue in East Hollywood, close to recently opened David Zwirner and other New York and LA galleries such as Morán Morán, James Fuentes, Sargent’s Daughter, Shrine and Clearing. The gallery opens onto a courtyard shared with new restaurant Etra and property developer Creative Space who are leading the ambitious redevelopment transforming the area into Los Angeles’ new arts hub.

The 5,000 sqft gallery will open with two concurrent inaugural exhibitions: Mother Tongues, featuring multidisciplinary works by a selection of standout artists from the gallery’s roster, and a solo show of monumental ceramic sculptures made by Zizipho Poswa during her recent residency at the Center for Contemporary Ceramics at California State University, Long Beach.

The gallery’s expansion was announced in ARTnews and The Art Newspaper, and covered by Art Forum, and Surface Magazine amongst others.
