MTN SA retains best mobile network status in latest MyBroadband survey

MTN remains SA’s best mobile network for coverage, speed and quality, according to the latest MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report Q3 2022. MTN maintained the number one spot with an increase in network quality score of 9.71 – from 9.50 in the second quarter of the year – which is well ahead of competitors who scored 6.78 and below.

MTN was also named best network across the four main metros of Tshwane, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town; and also placed first in the two newly added metros of Bloemfontein and Gqeberha – proof of the network’s expanded reach, modernisation drive and unrelenting focus on quality.

“The recent rolling blackouts and outages have placed immense strain on mobile networks everywhere, affecting lives and livelihoods, and significantly increasing the frustration factor for all of us. We are extremely pleased to have been able to ensure that the majority of our customers’ network experiences have been only minimally impacted during this time, or not at all, and that they’ve been able to remain in touch with their loved ones, logged into their favourite apps, and online for work and play, despite the odds”, says Michele Gamberini, Chief Technology & Information Officer at MTN SA.

The MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report Q3 2022 is based on results from MyBroadband’s Speed Test App which were recorded between 1 July 2022 and 30 September 2022. The download speed (60%), upload speed (20%), and latency (20%) are used to calculate a Network Quality Score.

“Our customers have come to expect only the very best quality from MTN, and we are delighted to have once again been able to match and even surpass our previous performance levels. Our growing 5G footprint and expanding 4G reach into new areas during the period, most notably into rural areas, is something of which we are particularly proud”, continues Gamberini.

“We embarked on a major network modernisation and expansion drive in 2020 and aim to continue improving our network coverage and reach as the need to enhance access broadly, and open the door to new digital opportunities for as many people as possible, grows. We don’t want anyone to be left behind”.

MTN’s countrywide Modernisation of Network South Africa (MONZA) project will see an additional 1,350 new MTN sites being built before the end of 2022, while MTN’s rural rollout will continue to bring network and connectivity services to people in the most remote and rural areas of South Africa. MTN aims to have over 100 rural deployments nationally in highly underserved areas by the end of the year.

“MTN’s unrelenting focus on connecting the unconnected – no matter the challenges – continues to keep more South Africans connected than ever before. This is only the beginning, and we will not stop in our drive to do more for more of our customers, every day,” concludes Gamberini.
