City’s 2022 class of Junior City councillors graduate

This year’s graduating class of Junior City Councillors (JCC) represented a diverse group of young individuals who displayed exceptional leadership skills and a deep passion for their communities. Their commitment to serving their fellow citizens and their dedication to learning about the inner-workings of local government, made them exemplary members of our programme.

As Speaker of Council, and together with Alderman Eddie Andrews, the Executive Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, as well as the City’s JCC Custodian, Councillor Donovan Nelson – the latter of whom has been so committed and enthusiastic in terms of providing meaningful support and guidance to this class – we congratulated the graduates on their achievements and encouraged them to continue making a positive impact in their respective communities.

I believe the graduation event and JCC programme as a whole, emphasises the City’s commitment to investing in the future of our youth and nurturing a culture of responsible, engaged, and active citizenship.

The JCC also honoured one of their own junior councillors who sadly passed away during the term. Junior Councillor Zanton Basson was honoured for his brave spirit and his commitment to envisioning and realising a changed community.

The late Junior Councillor’s parents also received a gift in memory of him.

Cllr. Nelson ended proceedings by stating that, ‘As the JCC custodian, I am proud of these young leaders, and I am confident that their contributions will continue to make our city a better place for all its residents. Their graduation is a testament to the power of education and the value of investing in our youth.’

Once again, I extend our warmest congratulations to the Junior City Councillors of 2022 on completing and graduating from our programme, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
