Second masterclass completed

The branch’s Emerging Artists Programme aims to assist under-resourced, inexperienced, and relatively unknown artists in Cape Town.

‘Our Emerging Artists Programme gives many young artists a foot in the door of various creative sectors. Through the programme, we are able to offer accessible visual art capacity-building training, as well as exhibition opportunities,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Many of the artists who participate in exhibitions lack formal training and often request advice on various aspects of their craft such as preparing a canvas, framing, and art installation.

‘We are therefore implementing a series of practical masterclasses to teach emerging artists methods and techniques to assist with these key aspects of their practice,’ said Councillor Van der Ross.

The second session of these masterclasses was held on Saturday, 10 February, during which the artists were introduced to different painting mediums and taught how to use them effectively.

Other topics on the day included colour theory, brush technique, mixing paint and other skills.

The first masterclass took place last year and focused on preparing a canvas, while the third takes place in March and will focus on installation.

‘Our emerging artists bring diversity to the industry. They represent a multitude of cultures, backgrounds and artistic approaches. This is reflected in the variety of artworks and broadens our artistic landscape,’ said Councillor Van der Ross.
