Our analyst team at Picodi.com checked the public transport fares in 45 cities worldwide and juxtaposed the transport expenses with local average wages.

Here’s a quick look at our findings:

– The most expensive single tickets can be found in London ($5.19), Zurich ($4.75) and Oslo ($3.91)

– The highest prices for monthly passes are paid by citizens of London ($271), Dublin ($166) and New York ($127)

– In this ranking, Johannesburg is among the cheaper cities – a monthly pass costs R779.60 (or $44), which is 3% of the average net wage in Johannesburg. This result is similar to ratios in Amsterdam (2.9%) and Stockholm (3%)

– In three out of 45 cities, public transport is entirely free for citizens – Luxembourg, Estonia’s capital, Tallinn and Malta’s capital, Valletta.
