In 1886, a South African politician John Paterson led a group of businessmen to London where they formed the Standard Bank. It was first called the Standard Bank of British South Africa. In 1965, Standard Bank strengthened its operations in 10 African countries. It then merged with the Chartered Bank in 1969 and formed the known Standard Chartered Bank.
